if you haven't noticed, its been a while since we've put out a proper record. this isn't purely on account of our general laziness, but partly due to legal battles. the upside is, while we sort this all out, im planning on recording a few cover songs in my garage for free release. i figure it'll be a good way to hone my studio skills copying things i love, pay homage to killer bands, and stay busy without xbox.
Little Miss Blue - Dion and The Belmonts trav got me a dion and the belmonts record cause i dug a bunch of his stuff and i discovered this song. its rad and super catchy. the only part thats a little iffy is the 'little miss blue' part cause its all elvisy and shit and i can't really pull that sorta thing off. peaks: capo on the 12th fret for guitar felt reallll nice. joe just drove across the country and is staying at my place while he and his gf apartment hunt so he was around to vibe on it. hes got big plans for a belle and sebastian cover too, i think. pits: tried to do some tack piano in the living room but chelsea was taking a nap and put a stop to that shit real quick. also strings woulda been real good on this but i can't play my violin for crud yet. ![]()
A Picture Postcard - The Promise Ring this is the first promise ring song i ever heard and i heard it on the 411 skate vid (best of volume 4... just found it on youtube here! marc johnson shreds btw). and that was huge... i guess it was basically the first thing like it i had heard. in 1997 i was still only really aware of blink 182 and the vandals. its sort of a weird song to cover cause what rules about it is how it sounds sorta bad and its barely got what you'd call a verse or a chorus and i can't sing anything like davey von bolen, but i love the song so i figured i'd sit down and give it a shot... peaks: i got to drum on this one again and kinda hit my stride. it wasn't all that bad, i think i've peaked as a percussive player... honestly, its insane how bad my rhythm is. pits: i think i sound a little weird singing this stuff. ![]()
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon i feel like a big ole' dork posting two beatles-related covers in a row (espesh since our band name is hellogoodbye) and since its the beatles and i know some people get mad about sliding your feet into such big shoes. but its the holidays. gimme a break. big j chose to speak specifically on christmas but i'd like to with a happy holidays to all. especially those celebrating festivus. peaks: havin' me trav and our friend vadim doing group vocals in my living room. killer room sound. pits: the tracks sorta started to pile up on this one and it became a little bit of a beast to mix... can't you hire people for this shit? ![]()
Do You Want To Know a Secret - The Beatles so... the beatles rule. right? this song rules cause its an early one... and its short... and easy to play. i have this giant book called 'recording the beatles' which gets really in depth on all the beatles studio techinques, and i looked through it to see if there was a breakdown on 'do you want to know a secret', but there wasn't so i winged it. er wung it. let's see, peaks and pits (highs and lows) of tracking this one... peaks: recording the teeny 50's "Kay" amp i got on the last tour. its awesome how something so small and quiet can sound all big and fuzzy when you record it. NEW FAV. pits: i called aaron to see if he could come drum but it was black friday and he was in alta-dena furniture shopping or some shit. i tried my hands at it and it sounded like my hands had muscular dystrophy, but thankfully you can chop things up and completely change everything. that way it sounds alright. thats generally my motto. ![]() MORE COMING SOON. oh, say... weekly or so. |
